Penang Digital Library – A Modern Library Without Physical Books

By | November 1, 2017

The Penang Digital Library is a place where knowledge is obtained via the use of information and communication technology, and a conducive environment which encourages interaction and collaboration. Unlike a traditional library, the Penang Digital Library does not have any physical books. Members can access e-books, and use the library anytime as it is open 24 hours a day. There is also free WIFI here, of course. This modern library is initiated by the Penang State Government, working together with Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O), Keysight Technologies, and TIME.

The Penang Digital Library is housed in the former Puspanita building along Jalan Masjid Negeri (135, Jalan Masjid Negeri, 11600 Georgetown, Penang. Helpdesk: 04-3708715. Office: 04-3708687). It has ample spaces that visitors can use to study and have discussions. Most of the visitors are students, and it is quite crowded especially during the time leading to school examinations.

Another interesting aspect of the Penang Digital Library is that it has an in-house bakery, run by LOVE A LOAF bakery cafe. Visitors can get food, bread/bun, cakes, coffee, and tea here. The LOVE A LOAF bakery cafe here opens 24 hours daily as well.

The Penang Digital Library is a great initiative that will encourage learning and collaboration, taking advantage of technology for knowledge attainment. I hope more facilities like this will be built in the future, both in Penang and throughout Malaysia.
